Opening Reception: Thursday March 18, 2026, 3-6pm
SHAPE SHIFT brings together new work by Dina Cline, Katherine Clarke Langlands, and Joy Ray, created during a residency at the Monte Azul Centro de Arte.
The three artists are members of the U.S.-based collective nHnT (neither Here nor There), whose ongoing dialogue explores how artistic practices evolve through conversation, distance, and shared study. SHAPE SHIFT extends this inquiry by asking how temporary immersion in a shared place can shape artistic thinking and material processes.
Working across painting, sculpture, and textiles, each artist responds to the local environment in distinct ways. Cline presents gestural paintings that draw from the forms of regional greenscapes and natural rhythms of growth, decay, and renewal. Langlands exhibits stones gathered from the surrounding landscape, painted and arranged to create a sculptural composition of temporary order, alongside an activation and concept drawings. Ray contributes textile works investigating the historical and cultural impact of gold in Costa Rica through archival texts and artifacts.
Together, these works posit geography not as backdrop but as agent: a force that unsettles, reshapes, and compels us to reimagine what art can be when it is neither here nor there, but precisely of a place.
In April, nHnT will present this exhibition in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Brewery Artwalk, further exploring how shifts in place transform perception, artistic process, and collective exchange.
